Before you elect COBRA

Losing employer coverage? Compare before you elect COBRA.

COBRA lets you keep your old plan, usually at the full premium plus a fee. A private PPO plan may cost less for people in good health. See both side by side with one licensed advisor.

  • Compare before your election window closes
  • Nationwide PPO access, keep your doctor

Private plans are medically underwritten. Eligibility, pricing and benefits depend on the applicant and the state, and your advisor confirms what you qualify for before anything is signed.

The problem

COBRA can cost more than you expect

You pay the full premium

While you worked, your employer likely paid part of your premium. With COBRA you usually pay all of it yourself, plus up to a 2% administrative fee.

The clock is running

You typically have 60 days to elect COBRA. That is enough time to compare your options, but not enough to put it off.

It is temporary

COBRA usually lasts up to 18 months after a job loss, so you will need a longer-term plan eventually.

Priced for the whole group

COBRA continues your former employer's group plan, priced for everyone on it rather than for people in good health.

What is COBRA?
COBRA continuation coverage lets you keep your former employer's group health plan for a limited time after you leave a job or lose eligibility. You keep the same plan, but you usually pay the full premium yourself, plus up to a 2% administrative fee.
How long do I have to decide on COBRA?
You typically have 60 days to elect COBRA, counted from the date you receive your election notice or the date your coverage ends, whichever is later. Check your notice for your exact deadline.
Can a private plan cost less than COBRA?
It may. Private plans are medically underwritten, so people in good health may find options that cost less than continuing their employer plan at the full price. It depends on the applicant, the state and the plan. Your advisor compares both honestly, and sometimes COBRA is the better choice.
If I compare first, can I still elect COBRA?
Generally yes, as long as you elect within your election window. Comparing private options does not use up your COBRA election. Your advisor helps you decide before your deadline.
Is a private plan guaranteed to approve me?
No. Private plans are medically underwritten and not every applicant is approved. That is one more reason to compare before your COBRA window closes, so you keep both options open.
What should I have ready for the call?
Your COBRA election notice if you have one, the date your employer coverage ends, and the names of the doctors you want to keep.
Is this really free?
Yes. Talking with your advisor and seeing your options costs nothing, and there is no obligation to buy. If you choose a plan, the insurance company pays the agency. Your premium is the same either way.
Will I get flooded with calls?
No. Your request goes to Limitless Health only. One licensed advisor reaches out, and that is the person you work with from start to finish. We never sell or share your information with other agencies or lead buyers.
